White County was created in 1857 from Habersham County and named for a Georgia legislator, David T. White. The seat, Cleveland, sits at the junction of GA 75 and GA 129 in the Blue Ridge foothills, and the county stretches north into the mountains along the Chattahoochee's upper reach.
The county's landmarks are the kind visitors remember: Yonah Mountain, the roughly three-thousand-foot granite monolith between Cleveland and Helen; Unicoi State Park and its mountain lake on the town's northern edge; Anna Ruby Falls just beyond in the Chattahoochee National Forest; and Helen, the Bavarian-themed village the town remade itself into in 1969 after its lumber economy collapsed.
For buyers the county divides into three books: the county seat's in-town streets and mountain-adjacent neighborhoods around Cleveland, vacation and second-home property toward Helen and the national forest edge, and acreage on the county's quieter slopes.
