How long does a pre-approval last?

Answered by Rob Dietrich, REALTOR® eXp Realty, LLC Published September 6, 2026

The Short Answer

How long does a pre-approval last?

Most pre-approval letters are good for 60 to 90 days. Documents and credit profiles are re-verified before the rate lock and again before closing, so keep the file current through the whole process. If the letter expires mid-search, the refresh is usually quick once the file is current, so renew it with your lender before you keep writing offers.

Rob's Explanation

A pre-approval is a snapshot of your file at a moment in time. Lenders re-check the picture before locking a rate and again before closing.

Timing matters in an offer market, because the letter's date is part of its credibility with sellers.

What I Would Consider

Note the letter's expiration date when it arrives, and renew before it lapses if the search runs longer than the letter.
